This is a good idea, and the briefcases are a good metaphor. While I can appreciate that it takes some time to get the code to work, it would be very helpful to know what questions you are going to ask. I would recommend that you write the questions/answers now, and after they are done, finish the software.
Also, this could be done as a competition, where students "study" the questions by working through the exercises, and then compete to give the answers most quickly to the rest of the class when called upon. Or the instructor could have a slightly different version of questions and answers, and the students, after "practicing" on their version of the questions, could then compete to answer the instructor's.
