== Topic 23: Any place for let go & let God? ==

'''Question''': In light of the discussion in ch. 18 of How People Grow, do you think there’s a place for being completely passive, letting go & letting God, in the Christian life? (Be sure to do more research into the issue. If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinions.)

Many people believe that to let go and let God is to completely just give it all to God and walk away and ignore the problem. God is not going to take it and fix it without some effort from you. God wants to know that you trust Him but at the same time He wants to know that you are also willing on your part. To let go and let God is really to come to the conclusion that you can’t do it solely on your own and you are ready to accept help from God and let go of your pride that you don’t need anyone or anything. I think if people could just realize that, then we wouldn’t have so many relationships fall apart or people feeling like there is no hope with whatever they are struggling with, big or small.

The book How People Grow, states what the Bible Reveals About Personal Growth, for an example in the story about a married couple named Rich and Stephanie. They were very devoted Christians when they started out, but after twenty five years they started to develop some problems with their marriage. Stephanie was a control freak and Rich had a sexual addiction. Their marriage was growing further and further apart and their three children were the only thing that was holding them together. Eventually the kids weren’t enough for Stephanie to stay in the marriage so they separated. They had started to lose their affection for each other and their spiritual connection with God. They decided to go to marriage counseling, hoping that it would help them where their spiritual life had not. For awhile they were trying to change each other and fix their problems on their own. When their counselor suggested to let go of trying to change each other and let God work in their lives they were hesitant. They didn’t know where God was in this big mess they had gotten themselves in. They were in this mess because they stopped listening to God in the first place. When they let God back in and trusted him to help them through all this their marriage slowly started to come back together. They didn’t just give up and sit there and wait for God to suddenly say ok your marriage is fixed go home. They finally realized that they needed to ask God to help them with their issues individually and then together. They still had to put forth their own effort. Rich and Stephanie’s story is a great example of how let go and let God is a two way thing. God wants to help you but you have to ask him and want to help yourself.

In the book How People Grow, the author states that there is a danger in preaching the work of the Holy Spirit in people's lives. Most people want to bail out of their responsibility and "let go and let god." For example, I (Ashley) had a really good friend my 6th grade year. She was my best friend. She was over my house all the time, and she even stayed over on weeknights. Her house wasn't very safe for her, she often came over in tears because of what she had seen. Her father was an alcoholic and he would beat her mother. Sometimes he beat her mother in front of her. She was always praying to God that he would just go away or miraculously get better. She made me promise not to tell anyone. She would always talk about how she couldn't believe God would let this happen, and why wouldn't God just make him stop. Finally one night after her father had come home drunk, I talked her into calling the police. Her father went to jail that night. Once he realized what he was doing to his family, he slowly started to sober up. I believe that God wasn't letting anything happen, he was trying to talk to her heart and get her to reach out for help. This is a great example, because she blamed God for not helping her and not fixing her dad's problem. Once she realized she had to help God help her, everything fit together. Just letting go and letting God is using your faith.

Some religious theories on this belief, letting go and letting god, have similarties and differences, especially when it comes to sanctification. Sanctifiacation is known as an act of God which he eliminates sin in a saints life. The main religion view is connected to faith in God, but some views on sanctification are contrastive as well. The Keswick theology states that we as people get complete victory over sin, if we just surrender to Jesus. Although they believe they have to surrender their hearts to Jesus, they also realize that they can't just wait around for Jesus to take it. They spend time with God through their 'powerful preaching' and their reflection time. They realize that they have to work to get to "absolute surrender." People have to take the step themselves and atually let God be in control, God always help as long as we just ask. This can be a form of letting go and letting God. American Fundamentalism shares the deep roots of the Keswick Theory. Even though Keswick beliefs are connected with God's love just like the Wesleyan point of view, Wesleyan's theory appear unalike. Wesleyan is known as "theology of love"; God's love. Wesleyan Theory believes that we are never without sin and that God's love just covers our sin, however Keswick Theory believes we can reach to perfectionism as long as we ask God to get rid of our sin. Wesleyan Theory is based on the belief that we as people are never free from sin unless we live obedience to God's will and that faith doesn't exsist without love and obedience. On the other hand Keswick theory is basen on the belief that someone's obedient heart is filled with the holy spirit and you have to trust in God to the full. "While the Wesleyan teaching emphasized a sanctification that issued forth in love to God and neighbor, the higher life form emphasizes victory over sin." (Higherlife)

Even though these views on religion or so called theories seem to view santification different, they still seem to view faith the same. In life people need faith to get by and this faith consists of letting go and letting god in control. Our faith for God helps to take our sin away and to help us get rid of sin that we continue to be tempted to do, as long as we repent and work with God to better ourselves. For example I (Holly) had an addiction of smoking in the eigth and ninth grade and once I became a christian I knew I had to get rid of this addiction. At first it was hard because the devil kept tempting me with cigarettes, the smoke in places made my mind want to smoke even though I knew it was wrong. Finally I had to put my faith in God and with patience I quit my smoking addiction. All it takes is one belief, that God can help you take the steps to overcome. These steps consists of patience, knowing that it takes time to let go and let God. The Holy Spirit is what brought upon us to help us as long as we let it. For Galatians 6:22-23 says, "But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, PATIENCE, kindness, goodness, FAITHFULNESS, gentleness, and self control."

Discipline also plays a part in letting go and letting God. Some people think that praying at night once a week or only when they are having a hard time is going to change their life. God isn't going to miraculously make every prayer a priority. Kind of like a parent, if their child sees a commercial on t.v. and wants a certain barbie doll or video game, the parent isn't going to pay attention if the child only asks for it one time. Hebrews 12:7-8 "Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons."

Faith is a trust or belief that does not require proof, therefore why can't we have faith and be in the place of letting go and letting God? We can do this but the word also tells us that we need to take our own step of faith and let God actually help us get over the problem/situation. In Exodus chapter fourteen Moses shows us how to use our faith. He shows that we shouldn't be afraid and that we should just let God be in control of the situation. When the Israelites were trapped and couldn't get away from Pharaoh's army, they were afraid because they were trapped at the Red Sea. This is when Moses put his trust in God and told his people to not be afraid for God is with them. This is when God gave Moses the ability to part the Red Sea. Just like Moses and the Israelites, if we take a step out of our comfort zone and put our trust in God that he will take over the problem/situation, and everything will turn out fine.

Our group believes that to let go and let God is to not just sit back and do nothing but to give and take a little. You need to let God have control but you also need to put forth effort too. For example, I (Chelsie) was anorexic when I was in middle school. I knew that I couldn’t help myself because if I could I never would have gotten that way in the first place. I didn’t want help from my parents and I didn’t want to go to a doctor because I hated people telling I had a problem even though I knew they were right. So my only other option was to turn to God. I couldn’t just say ok God here it is now do something about it. I had to put God in control but had to put forth some effort on my part. It took some time but with God in control everything was ok. So whatever your going through big or small just let God have control and put in a little effort yourself and you will find that you can get through it.

What it all comes down to is just having faith in God and in yourself. Some people believe that God doesn't help us when we pray. Since we can't hear what he has to say or actually see what he does, they lose their faith. In letting go and letting God, you have to realize that the unanswered prayers are what get us through. God helps us in unseen, unimaginable ways. But you have to want to help yourself in order to grow spiritually. You just can't bail out and drop everything, while expecting God to take care of your life and make everything work out. You have to work with God to better your life. In conclusion, letting go and letting God is what we do everyday. If you pray and talk to God, while keeping faith and trusting that God will steer you in the right direction, you're letting go and letting God.
How can you be sure you are saved?

'''Introduction'''
Based on our study over the course of this semester, we have learned that there are many of the same kind of beliefs in different religions. Most religions believe the same, but worship different ways. On the other hand you also have religions that are completely different and have nothing to do with each other. In this paper we hope to give you a clear idea about assurance of Salvation and how it differs from religion to religion. Based on the research that we gather up form our sources, we hope to give you some strengths and weaknesses of each religion and maybe some ideas of how to make each one better.

'''Christianity'''
For instance, the Christian belief is that salvation comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ who dies on a cross. And to receive this salvation all that is required is repentance, baptism, and a lifelong commitment to a Christian lifestyle and faith. We as Christians also believe that having faith in the Holy Trinity is a big part of your assurance. The holy trinity is God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit all united as one that Jesus Christ. We should understand that god loves more than we can imagine .He sacrificed his only son Jesus because of our sin and to bring closer to him. God loves us immensely because we are his children and we are proud to be called as God’s children .So; we should try to be God’s children and should accept the truth that death is there. So, we should try to be blessed by the God .And be prepared for building the steps of kingdom of Heaven which is determined by our deeds that we perform in this life.

'''Baptism'''
For Christians being baptized is one of the most important steps in becoming saved. There is no way that you can be saved unless you are baptized in the name by the holy spirit and in water. You are baptized in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit. The reason that we are baptized in water is because, Jesus was baptized in water and we are to try to do as he did why we are still here on this earth. If it was a necessity for Jesus to be baptized in water as he told John the Baptist then it is a necessity for us to do the same. The meaning of being baptized in water is not just for our follow man to see but it is a representation of us getting a new body. We go down dirty and we come up clean.

'''Salvation'''
What is Salvation to Christians? Salvation is the way of life, the ultimate goal, the chance to see and live spiritually with the great God our creator for all eternity. This is why being saved is so important to those who really are Christians. People say on a daily bases that they are Christians, but they don’t know the real meaning of being a Christian. To them it is just a joke, but to real Christians this is everything. When you can really see the true prize in your vision, then you will really understand what and who a Christian is. Believe me you want to lose that vision so you will really do whatever it takes to get it. That is being saved!
'''Muslims'''Next we would like to inform you about Muslims and some of their beliefs about how they can be saved. There are many differences between Muslims and Christians when it comes to your assurance of being saved. For instance, Muslims believe there is a God but, the answer to God comes from his prophet Muhammad who they believe is the last prophet of God. So they choose to worship this prophet Muhammad. They have certain rules which would be there daily duties. These duties include five daily prayers, a welfare tax called zakat, fasting (during the month of Ramadan), and a pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca; these four elements plus the profession of faith are called the Five Pillars. Not only that but when Muslims pray they have to face east because they believe that is the direction that Muhammad. With Muslims they find that it is okay to have multiple spouses, but if they are caught having adultery or false accusations of adultery they are severely punished.

'''Salvation for Muslims'''
In Islam there is no point of no return, God is always willing to offer pardon based upon genuine repentance. So to Muslims their way to heaven or Allah is through their actions. As long as they are living the right life and following all the rules and praying sincerely to God every day they will be okay. According to the Islamic doctrine, “on the Last Day when the world will come to an end, the dead will be resurrected and judgment will be pronounced on every person in accordance with his deeds. Those condemned will burn in hellfire, and those saved will enjoy the abiding pleasures of paradise. Besides suffering in physical fire, the damned will also experience a fire "in their hearts"; similarly, the blessed, besides physical enjoyment, will experience the greatest happiness of divine pleasure.”

''' Mormon'''
When learning about the religion of Mormon, we have found that anyone that does not know what they believe that they can be easily persuaded the wrong way. Mormon call their church the Church of Christ; they believe that everything they do is the same thing the church did during the time that Jesus was on the Earth or somewhat close to it. The church of the Mormon is found all over the world. Every church is connected all around the world and no matter where their location may be they all share the same president

'''The beginning beliefs'''
The Mormons believe in a man named Joseph Smith and that he found and translated the original Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith was shown by an angel named Moroni where to find the two pieces of the book that were buried. The pieces were on the American continent and were written here as well; the only problem was that the pieces were written in Egyptian Hebrew, and Greek and no one could read them. The Mormons believe that God gave Joseph smith the knowledge to translate the languages and he did it in 60 days. As he translated someone else wrote what he was saying in English. There proof that this is true is that Joseph Smith only had a third grade education. It might sound weird but they believe that the only reason he was able to translate the book was because God gave him the gift. They do believe in God but they trust in Joseph Smith to answer their prayers and to show them the way of life. They believe in the twelve disciples but Joseph Smith was a profit and profits and anyone can be an apostle but it takes a certain individual that is picked by God to become a prophet.

'''Baptism'''
When it comes to baptism, Mormons also believe that you have to be baptized in water to work towards Jesus Christ and to be like him. They don’t get baptized until the age of eight. They said eight is the age when they fully understand what they are doing so that is the age that they can aware of their right and wrong actions. The deacons and priest of the ones who do all of the baptisms. Mormons also believe that you can do baptisms for the dead. So if someone who has died was not baptized they can be baptized by some that is already baptized. The only thing the person who is do the baptism has to do is find all the information that they can on the dead person that they are getting baptized and pray for them. But the person who finds the information has to go through submerge again.

'''Differences'''
After seeing some of the beliefs of all three of these religions there are differences that you should know and understand between each so there is no confusion. For instance, each religion has its own holy book. To Christians we don't believe in any Muhammad as being a prophet. Our proof to the is the Holy Bible: no where inside the bible does it even mention the name of Muhammad. To Muslims though they read the Quran and it teaches otherwise. The same goes for Mormon’s; they have their own book called the book of Mormon. Another difference is that Christianity and Mormonism believe in baptism but Muslims do not. Or when it comes to prayer it is important to all, but each religion prays a certain way. Like Muslims pray five times a day and only to the east, but Christian and Mormons pray as many times as they want and any where they want. Muslims and Mormons belief in prophet and Christian belief in Jesus Christ. But all the religion led to the God and same idea of being saved.

After going through all the religion we tried to go through Christianity and tried to find what we need to be saved and to meet Jesus Christ.
Assurance of salvation Assurance of Salvation is all about how we can be shaved .Salvation also means going to Heaven after Death.
Christ is held to have defeated the powers of evil, or purchased our liberation or, endured in our place the penalty of sin or offered a sacrifice sufficient sufficient or “atone” for our guilt , This last suggestion makes one aware of the two fold meaning of the word ‘atonement’. In its etymological sense, it simply ‘at-one- ment’ and is virtually synonymous with ‘reconciliation’ God in Christ at once shows us the truth about ourselves reveals the nature and the cost of the divine forgiveness and draws us into union with the triune God

Mercy can only be meritorious retribution is right Mercy goes beyond justice. Richard Holloway “The mystery remains that this prodigal universe sometimes redeems its own pain through extraordinary souls who from somewhere beyond all possibility, forgive the unforgivable” By setting both the offence perpetrated and the suffering caused in the context of God’s love for both offender and victim, the latter is enabled to forgive, in the hope and trust that, in the end truth will out , the wrong will be rectified and both offender and victim will be transformed and reconciled. The above understanding of forgiveness is God’s own merciful love and very great The Christ life and death were openly intended by him as an offering to God to make expiation for human sin. Christ died on the cross to give us a perfect human life. He died because of our sin to give us a life and in order to win us back to God and to appear a wrathful God. Christ life and death are such value to God that they enable or permit him to remit both repentant and apologetic sinners freely, whether or not they are in a position to plead Christ’s sacrifice .By incorporation into Christ’s death by baptism wearer set free from guilt and reunited with God is merciful to sinner, not because their debt of punishment is paid by Christ’s passion and death rather, Christ’s passion works by prevailing upon God not to be severe in his dealing with sinners. In my opinion, after reading the book. I think that it is hard to say that I can be saved because God has given us each and everything his only son Jesus Christ, he gave to us and he was peeled on the cross .This gives an idea that God loves us more than we think and beyond our imagination .The one and only way of saving or being saved is following the way of Christ i.e. try to go in path that bible tells. Try to give him honor by spreading his message of love i.e. preaching about his greater deeds and his love towards the mankind. Trying to baptize the innocent people who have faith in him and give them an idea to the path that Jesus told us to follow. If we follow the path he taught us and try to go in that path spreading his message of love i.e. first love your God and love your neighbor than there’ll be no war only peace and every innocent will get chance to live and love each other . In this way we are able to create the lovely world of God and we can be saved.

'''Who needs to be saved?'''
Everyone needs to be saved. No one who matures to the point of moral awareness does only and always what they believe they should do. And even when we obey our consciences, we do not do so for the right reason – to glorify God. As Paul told Romans,’ whatever does not proceed from faith is sin”. On the other hand, a very large number of human beings never achieve moral awareness .Many die before birth, and many more die in early age. But these people are also sinners. Adam sinned on behalf of the race, in his moral probation in the Garden of Eden, so that when he sinned we all did , this is why we die ,even if we do not mature physically . We can all say with David, “I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me” (Ps 51:5). Unless our sin is dealt with, we cannot be reconciled with God .So next we must ask how sinners can be saved .Paul has taught that the free gift of God “in the grace of the one man Jesus Christ,” brings justification (Rom 5:15-16) Just as all who are “in Adam” die, so all who are “in Christ” will be made alive.

''' Whom is God Trying to save'''?
“As if everyone needs to be saved, but there is only one Savior for all of humankind, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Because Christ is the Lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world, all of God’s saving work among the peoples of the world, in all times and places, has been objectively accomplished in and through the one act of obedience of the incarnate Son of God. All sinners who will stand before God in the final judgment and hear God’s wonderful declaration that they are found not guilty will be justified because Christ completely obeyed the righteous demands of God in all the ways that they did not. They will be invited to live with God forever in the glorious new earth and heaven because they died to sin and rose again to new life in union with Christ. We say that someone was saved, or is now saved, but the fullness of salvation is something that still lies ahead of us. The saved are people who once were lost but now have been found; they were blind but now see; they were dead in sin but now are alive in Christ. All of this was accomplished for us totally by God’s grace through a work of the triune God; having been chosen by the Father, God’s people were redeemed by the Son who gave his life for those whom the Father chose in him; they were illumined, regenerated and sanctified by the Spirit. So then, everyone needs to be saved, and the Word became flesh, lived a perfect life, died a sinless death and was raised from the dead to accomplish salvation for those whom the Father chose in him. Adam, Noah, Job, Abraham and David, who all lived before Christ, were saved because of Christ’s sacrifice for them. None of them knew what we now know about the triune nature of God or the means by which God reconciles sinners to himself, but they were saved by Christ’s work nevertheless. We are left wondering, however, about the many people who had no contact with any of these figures familiar to us because of the biblical record. When Abraham was called, there were people in North America and Australia who were completely ignorant of God’s covenant promises to Abraham. Must we conclude that all of those people were outside God’s saving purposes, that none of them were among the elect? What about people who do not hear the good news concerning what Christ has done to save sinners even now? Must we assume that God has not chosen even one of them to salvation? On the other hand, if some of the elect were among those who had no contact with revelation concerning God’s covenant with sinners, how was God making himself known to them and what did he ask of them by way of an acceptable response that would constitute “saving faith”? Furthermore, how significant are the non saving benefits of God’s gracious work in Christ to such people? To such questions we now proceed.”

Salvation is made up of two words justification, and Sanctification.
Justification may be defined as “that judicial act of God by which on the basis of the meritorious works of Christ imputed to the sins and received enough faith, God declares the sins absolved from sin released from its penalty and restored as righteous”. Expressed simply it is being placed by God in a right relationship with himself. The major emphasis in justification is that it is an act of God. Although an act of God, it necessarily leads in the believer to a “walking in the spirit,” “bringing forth the fruit of the spirit” and “serving righteousness” for God who justifies and also gives new birth. And a call to whole hearted commitment. Saving faith leads to faithfulness to God in life. Paul clearly shows this in Galatians and Romans. (Source bible dictionary)

Sanctification is the process of being made holy .As the article on holiness makes clear, holiness when applied to things places and people means that they are consecrated and set apart for the use of God, who is utterly pure and apart from all imperfection and evil. God is said to be holy because God is unlike anything else that exist. People and things are said to be holy insofar as they are associated with God; thus spirit of God is the Holy Spirit. This association with in a cultic sense as separation from profane people, places, and things or in an ethical sense as separation from social and individual wrongdoing.

Paul says Christians have died to the law through the body of Christ by becoming part of the body of Christ. Christians participate in the death and resurrection of Jesus, just as Jesus death and resurrection set him free from sin and death. So, Christians’ union with him in death and resurrection set free from their sin and death. It also sets them free from the law because the law was given to increase sin so that people would be ready to accept salvation when it was offered. The coming of salvation also means freedom from the law because the purpose of the law has been fulfilled. One way of expressing the unity of Christ with God is to say that they have the same spirit that they know and will in the same

The Christians possession of the spirit of God is a way to be united with Christ and with God in such a way that all will know and will do in the same way. As Christ died and raised, so do Christians die and rise with him. As Christ possesses the spirit of God, so do Christians possession of the spirit of God, however is a matter not only of union with Christ but also of union with God. Dying and rising with Christ not only free human beings from sin but also gives them a place in Gods life.

Christians are already children of God. Through the Christ has taken all our sin out of our lives. This new life is possession of the spirit of Christ, which is also the spirit of God. The law of God sets forth God’s will because of its content
but because it was incapable of setting people free from the power of sin. Once people have been set free from the power of sin, however they do not follow the law because its purpose was to prepare for the coming of Christ, not serve as guide for life afterwards. Instead walk according to the spirit. In this way they do the will of God which is also what the law presents. With Christ, especially in his death and resurrection, the most important way of expressing the unity of believers is to say that they are incorporated into Christ, that they become part of body of Christ. Christ was raised from dead by the glory of the father, so we might walk in newness of life one day.

Baptism may have been accompanied by anointing that symbolized the gift of the Holy Spirit. Baptism creates an intimate union between Christ and the believer but also an intimate union among believers.
On the other hand, drinking the Eucharistic cup is participation in the blood of Christ, eating the Eucharistic bread is a participation in the body of Christ. This strongly suggest that when Christian do this in the memory of Jesus ,the Eucharistic bread and wine are the body and blood of Jesus; therefore consuming the Eucharistic bread and wine unites the one consuming with the blood of Christ.

Also like baptism, Participation in the Eucharist is union with Christ in death and resurrection .Celebrating the Eucharist is remembrance of Jesus' Last supper and his subsequent death and resurrection, and a participation in that death and resurrection. As we know, salvation as a free gift of God .By incorporating people into Christ, God brings them to the proper goal of human life

'''Conclusion'''
In conclusion you have now seen many similarities and differences between the religions and what each religion’s opinion is when it comes to being saved. Also as you may have figured out by, now there is no real definite answer that everyone, no matter what religion, knows about. It depends on you because you are the only person that can find the real meaning of being saved. You are also the only person that can really know if you are saved. So if you are unsure whether or not you are saved now is the time to wake up and do something about it, because ultimately that is between you and God.

== Topic 14: Assurance of salvation? ==

Based on what you know from the Bible & other sources (including the Theology Matters reading), what are the ways we can be sure that we’re saved? (Be sure to do more research into the issue. If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinions.)

''' Whom is God Trying to save'''?
“As if everyone needs to be saved, but there is only one Savior for all of humankind, Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

== Topic 16: How does God work? ==

'''Question''': Based on what you know from the Bible & other sources (including Theology Matters reading), how do you think that God works in the world & in the life of the Christian? (Be sure to do more research into the issue. If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinions.)

Throughout the Bible there are many different examples of how God works in the lives of humans. Many people often look at these examples and see them as miracles that happened long ago and simply do not occur anymore. Other people choose to believe that the works of God are some sort of myth or unrealistic story. However, the Bible and several other books prove that God still works very actively in the lives of Christians today just as he did many years ago. This paper will explain the many different ways God chooses to work in our lives and how He continues to shine through Christians each and every day.

When trying to find examples of how the Lord works in the lives of humans, what better place is there to look then the Bible. After doing much research, we have discovered that Gods word is expressed and his work is done in a variety of different ways. However, as a group, we feel that there at five essential and vital examples of how the Lord working in peoples lives located throughout the bible. Each example is a completely different illustration of God putting his touch on our world.

To begin with, God works by answering our prayers. In Ephesians Chapter 3 verses 20-21 it states “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” This passage is just simply saying that the Lord, our God is able to do things far beyond our power. He can exceed all human expectations and go beyond our imagination. All glory must go to God, because he is the one who will always be there for us until the end of time. Although our prayers may not always be answered at the exact time we want or the exact way to expect them to be answered. As Christians, we should always remember that God has all the power and His work will be done through our prayers. It may not always be the way we expect but God knows what is best for all of us and He has proven time and time again that His work will be shown through the prayers of His Christian followers.

Another great example in the book of Ephesians of God working in our lives is in chapter 6 verses 10-12. In these verses the Bible says, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” This verse is astonishing to me. It is saying that together as Christians we are going to face many evil and sinful situations. But if we stand strong for the Lord and use His word and His spirit as armor that we cannot be defeated by evil. This is promise from God saying that if we are strong in the Lord then he will be strong in us. This example was true during biblical times and is still true in today’s world. The Lord is our shepherd and he will forever watch over his sheep and protect us if we just stay strong in our faith. This promise is an amazing display of God working in our lives.

The Bible gives us a perfect outline of how to live our lives the Christian way, God’s way. Studying the Bible is another way that we can allow our Heavenly Father to enter our lives. The Bible is a great tool for us to use in order to become closer to Him and reach further into His word. As we study the Bible for ourselves, we must understand that the Word of God is perfect book that was created to guide us through our lives and live for Christ. By reading His book we will allow Him to speak to us and set a guideline for our lives. It is explained clearly in 2 Timothy 3:16-17; “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” These two verses are just another example of how God works in our life. A common misunderstanding is that God will just automatically show up in our lives if we are Christians. That assumption couldn’t be more wrong. Even though becoming a Christian is the first important step of living the life God has planned for us, it is not the only step. God expects us to do things to keep that faith strong and to express it to others. By reading the Bible, we gain more knowledge of Him and what he expects from us. By doing so, we open our hearts and minds to the Lord and allow him to enter and work in our lives. That is why reading the Bible is such a special part of our relationship with our God.

The Lord also works in our lives when we are at our worst. When we as humans feel as if no one is there for us and no one cares. Sometimes we get the misinterpretation that since we are Christians that nothing bad can happen to us, that just because God is abundant in our lives that we are invincible. However, that not the case. God uses suffering to help strengthen our relationship with him and other Christians. If things were perfect all the time then we would never experience overcoming obstacles first hand. He puts problems in our lives not to break us down, but to build is up. The old saying “what doesn’t kill me, will only make me stronger” can never be truer then in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Even though it may seem sometimes that we are all alone, we must remember that God is always with us and when no one else can help us, he truly can. Use your times of hardships to increase your faith in the Lord and strengthen your soul. There are going to be certain obstacles that you cannot overcome alone, but that is why God wants us to realize that he is always there to help. When the going gets tough, get with God. Sometimes these are the times where his work is most visible. As said so in the book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Lewis says that God is our savior and he will never give us more burden then we can handle.

Last but not least, another amazing way God shines down from heaven into our lives is through the words of other Christians such as preachers, ministers, and Christian leaders. It is clearly stated in Luke 3:3 that Jesus went from city to city and spread the word of His Father. The people listened and became enlightened within the Lord. He changed the lives of sinners forever just by speaking His Word to them. Now obviously we live in the A.D. era. Even though Jesus does not literally or at least visibly walk our streets and preach His Word, we still can hear what he has to say through preachers and ministers all around the world. The Lord has given the gift of preaching too many people. These people are essential to a prosperous Christian life. Some of the best ways to visibly see the Lord at work is to go to church and watch him work through your peers and hopefully through yourself as well. That is one of the reasons why going to church is so important. Some people ask; do you have to go to church to be a Christian? The answer to that question is, absolutely yes. Church is an outstanding way to hear the Lord speak to us in a variety of ways. That is why, no matter what the conditions are, no matter how bad you are feeling, it is important to try and get to church, because that day could be the day that God is speaking to you specifically. Hearing the teachings of God through another person is just another amazing way our Savior works in our lives.

Hopefully this paper provided several different examples of how the Holy Spirit can work in the lives of Christians today. It needs to be understood that God still performs miracles and still works in people’s lives just as much today as he did in the biblical times. Some people say that just because He isn’t raising anybody from the dead that He isn’t working in His Christians lives. For one, who’s to say that He hasn’t raised anybody from the dead recently and secondly, He performs far more miracles each and every day then we could ever imagine or understand. There are Christians all over the world that could go on and on about how God works in their lives. Faith goes a long way and we must have faith in our God in order to feel His hands being placed upon our Christian life. The bible says to trust in the Lord with all our heart and with all your might. That is what we must do each and every day and He will continue to provide for us and show His everlasting love in our lives day after day.

== Balancing Relationships ==

'''Introduction'''

This world is filled with many characteristics such as: love, joy and happiness; decisions, trials and tribulations; and wars, hate and sadness. The question then arises of how we may face the previous characteristics of this world. The options of how to face the world include: facing life alone - in total independence; facing it with relationships with other people; facing it with a relationship with only God; or finding a balance between the relationships a person has with God and people. The relationships on which we focus drive our lives and can either help us or hurt us. To face the characteristics of this world positively and effectively a person must follow the best guide to life: the Bible. The Bible is how a person can practically tell what relationships are needed and how to balance the relationships a person has with God and with man.

'''Total Independence'''

Very few people in life are totally independent. In fact, a person may find it difficult to remove him or herself from all aspects of society. Total independence and seclusion are many times utilized for social punishment. To illustrate this idea, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to the islands of Elba and later to Saint Helena as an imprisonment; as a punishment and to suppress him. In fact, with many imprisonments the punishment is centered on seclusion. During the Korean War many United States prisoners of war were imprisoned in complete seclusion as a means to completely cut them off from all other Americans. The reason was to quickly deteriorate their hopes of any victory and also to quickly ebb the morale and sanity of the soldiers. During this time, Korean soldiers would try to “brainwash” (this is when this term gained notoriety) the prisoners. They would slander capitalism and other American institutions as failures daily, and contrast that with proof of the superiority of communism (“Prisoners of War in the Korean War”). According to the listings in the article “Prisoners of War in the Korean War,” approximately 2,600 soldiers died in this type of setting, while other soldiers were claimed to suffer from disease or abuse. This information helps to prove that with being secluded and without something for which they could live, situations are difficult to face. Soldiers like this – living in seclusion and being repetitively attacked psychologically – would go to bed and not wake up the next morning.

Though seclusion may not be forced, through this example we can see the results of the secluded POWs when facing difficulties. This is the same with us in our relationships: if we are in seclusion we prevent ourselves from witnessing the love that is available to us from relationships with people. This way of living – a life of seclusion – is near impossible, though not wholly impossible. Like the prisoners of war we would have nothing for which we could live our lives making life meaningless. On the contrary, relationships give more meaning to our lives and more support in our lives, for it is difficult to face life alone. This proves that this option of facing the world is not the best.

'''The Extreme Possibilities of Dependence'''

Since total independence from any type of relationship is proven not to be the best way to live, the possibilities of a type of dependence will be covered. The two possibilities are living with relationships with only man and having a relationship with God alone.

'''''Relationships with Man'''''

The second overall option – the first dependency option – is that of having relationships with only man, which is the opposite of total independence. From the beginning of life on earth people have formed into tribes and similar groups to make life easier. The tribe would divide the work into tasks that certain people would be able to accomplish easier. For example, the males would hunt, defend the tribe if needed, and find protection against the weather while the women and some children would gather certain foods and prepare it to provide for the families and tribe. The system as a whole was very effective and helped the tribes flourish.
Just like that example of the tribes, we today depend on other people to work together to flourish. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 and 12 states that

Two are better than one…. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! … Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. (NIV)

Not much else can be added to this verse, for it speaks for itself. Everyone recognizes the power, abilities, and comfort that is available in a large group compared to what individuality offers. To illustrate how groups can bring strength and comfort to each member at the same time I will explain Jane Elliot’s eye color experiment. Jane Elliot, a grade school teacher, once conducted an experiment with her third grade class. I saw evident groups being formed in this experiment that fit into what was previously explained in Ecclesiastes 4. The purpose of this experiment was to see how children would learn firsthand the elements of discrimination. Elliot divided up the class based on eye color. The children with blue eyes went in one group and the other group was of brown-eyed children; the first group had to wear a collar around their necks to show the superiority of the other. Then, she told them that the blue-eyed group would be “on the bottom” and the brown-eyed group “on the top.” Jane then experienced the brown-eyed group acting physically and psychologically superior to the blue-eyed group. The brown-eyed group was standing up straighter and paying more attention in class, but they would mistreat the blue-eyed group. What the blue-eyed group did in response was very interesting. The group began struggling in all classes and seemed to consistently slouch. The most interesting thing the groups did when friendships were broken as Elliot started this experiment was after receiving harassment: new friendships were formed in these groups.

Next, Elliot tested the children again by reversing the order of superiority (along with the group wearing the collar); the blue-eyed group was now “on the top.” The brown-eyed group, whose members were once individuals “on the top," was then forming groups at the bottom just as the blue-eyed group did because they were the failing group. But when the brown-eyed group took advantage of their superiority, the blue-eyed group was more empathetic. When they were superior they were not as degrading as the brown-eyed group was, they also did not become individuals with power; they only were a group more superior to the brown-eyed group. No harassment was issued by the superior group. When looking at this experiment, a person can see that groups are formed out of need; out of desire of solace and comfort.

The children of Elliot’s third grade class can understand Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 with much ease. “It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth,” and also that, “By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst” (The Message).

'''''Relationship with God'''''

The other extreme possibility of having a relationship is only having a dependence on God. This was a popular belief during the Monastic Movement. The Monastic Movement focused on people taking a vow of poverty and solitude and go out into the wilderness to pray, to be educated, and to be spiritually grown (Kreis). This way of living worked well for the monks involved. The alone time that they spent in prayer and learning Scripture with God helped them when they went from community to community to share the Gospel with people. A person today may have a similar kind of solitude occur. It could be either on purpose, like a priest taking a sabbatical leave, or circumstantial. What I mean by circumstantial is that at times a person may lose support of friends and have to face things alone with God. Personally, I experienced this when I dedicated my life to Christ for all my friends left me and I was alone to grow and live for God. But the person that is alone should not worry about being physically alone – because God is there in spirit. He will come (John 14:18) and be a part of a person’s heart. Once He has come, He will give ample strength and aid (Isaiah 41:10) to a person and nothing in this world can separate that person from the love and grace that is given by God (Romans 8:35-39, Deuteronomy 31:6). This series of verses is what is promised by God and is proven true through the prophets and monks, as well as through any follower of Christ that has been alone.

There is a practicality in seclusion, as shown by Jay Dennis in his book The Jesus Habits. Dennis uses Jesus’ examples in the Gospels to show how people today can benefit from the practice of seclusion. To illustrate, Jesus was human so he got hungry, tired, his feet hurt, and he was worn by teaching. What Jesus would do to be renewed, restored and recharged was to go off alone to pray, as Luke 5:16 states that “Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray” (NASB). Sometimes we need to go off alone like Jesus to “spend time with God…and [allow our] emotional and spiritual batteries to be recharged” (Dennis). Dennis covers the following points of what Jesus accomplished from seclusion that we can follow: He found the Father’s will, prayed, recharged spiritually and emotionally, ate (Mark 6:31-32), gained the right perspective, learned to do spiritual battle and listened to what God wanted us to hear. I will briefly expound a few.

Being alone also helps us find the will of God. This example comes from the gospel of Matthew 26:36-46. Jesus went up to the garden of Gethsemane to withdraw to clarify his understanding of the will of the Father. Since he knew that he could not face what was to come on his own, he prayed, “Yet, not as my will, but as you (the Father) will.” He just needed reassurance of God’s will that everything would be made right. This shows us that secluding ourselves in prayer to find out and follow the Father’s will may not be the easiest or most convenient for us, but it is necessary to bring clarity to our perception of it.

The second that I will cover is that Jesus would use his seclusion to recharge spiritually and emotionally. It is a human quality to run out of energy physically, emotionally, and spiritually. An example of this is when Jesus, after healing many people and leading out demons, woke up in the morning while it was still dark and went off to a place of solitude to pray (Mark 1:34-35). This was Jesus’ time to recharge spiritually. Also, after finding out of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus went by boat to a solitary place (Matt. 14:13), which was Jesus’ time to grieve and recharge emotionally. Finally, after teaching in the mountains and feeding the crowd of five thousand, Jesus went off alone (Matt. 14:23) to have time to recharge physically.

The third is to gain the right perspective. When Jesus fed the five thousand in John 6 and the people saw the great miracle, people began to think that he was the Prophet that was expected to become king of the land. Jesus knew that they wanted him to become king – even by force – and, in response, He went off again to the mountains alone (John 6:14-15). He used this time to pray to God to gain the right perspective. Many times, people today should withdraw and really focus on gaining the right perspective of something to make sure it is within God’s will.

The fourth and final example on which I will expound is to do spiritual battle. Jesus, in Matthew 4:1-11, is brought out into the desert by the Spirit to grow spiritually by doing battle. Satan comes to tempt Jesus in his seclusion, but Jesus grows from this trial rather than falling into Satan’s hands as He beats the temptations of Satan. Many times people are tempted the most while in seclusion and prayer, but also win the greatest battles against Satan and his temptations in that seclusion. As Jesus did, we should have the Word of God to help defend us in this time of seclusion; as Joshua 1:8 says that we should not let the Word depart from us and we should “ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure [we] practice everything written in it” (The Message).

It is very practical to experience this alone time with God in today’s world. This can be very difficult at times, but even seclusion from aspects of society can have great effects. For example, things like disconnecting the computer, television, games, and music for a while and really getting into meditation of God and on His Word will aid a person, as in the past examples from Dennis’ book. Thus far, this seclusion with God is the most practical option of living life, for God promises to be all we need. The first was life without people and God, and the second was to live totally with people and not include God. But we must realize that God was before we ever were. Genesis 1:1 states that, “In the beginning God…” which proves man was not there yet, it was only God. We cannot live separate from God; on the contrary, God can live without us. Compared to our relationship with God, nothing is near that important. God alone is sufficient. But still, does living only in a relationship with God living life to the fullest that it can be? The best way to live life to its fullest would be to balance the two examples of dependence.

'''Balancing Dependence'''

Even in the Monastic Movement monks realized something major: that psychological disorders form when man has no other human relation. To solve this issue, the monk Pachomius gathered monks in small “communities” to give them some fellowship so that when the monks were travelling around Europe and came upon unbelievers the monks could teach the Gospel efficiently and without suffering from the lack of social skills. Soon after groups of monks were forming, monasteries were also made and Church reforms were more evident, which all prove that the fellowship and grouping was very effective.

Now, believers of Christ can learn from the monastic movement. If a person is alone God will be there and give strength and growth, but much more growth can come from other believers. There are two steps to effectively growing in a relationship. The first is live for God, building that relationship and focusing on that first and prior to any other relationship. The second, then, is to build relationships with other believers. This is often called the Body, or Church. With this relationship with other members of the Body, all believers are able to build each other up in Christ. Members are to “restore and reinstate” those believers that are seen to be overtaken in “misconduct and sin” (Galatians 6:1 AMP). Members are to build each other up and work together as one because “it is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Without the Body, or Church, we would not be able to build each other up and challenge such growth in the Spirit. God uses the other believers to further develop such things as discipline. God can use those people as an alternative source than from just Him doing things such as rebuking us and helping us grow (Cloud and Townsend).

If a person keeps God at the center of his or her relationships and of the upmost priority, and after that has a priority of other human relations to build on the first, then 1 Corinthians 12 is practiced and understood well. Chapter 12 explains how this Body of believers is supposed to act, and act much like human bodies. There are specific parts that complete certain tasks but there is an overall, common goal. All of the parts work together. The parts of this body include apostles, prophets, teachers, miracle workers, healers, comforters, and speakers of tongues. All gifts and talents can be used in its own respective way to complete goals. With no part being more important than another, each part can support another and work in unison. Then, as in ancient tribes, the parts of the Body share burdens and tackle the greatest burden, which is freeing others that are lost in Satan’s lies.

This is not saying that we are not to have relationships with people who are not followers of Christ, because even Jesus enjoyed being with such unbelievers. By having relationships with people who are not believers we can show the love of Christ and hopefully bring them to believe in God’s salvation. The key is, though, to show love and not to show any legalism in exercising faith. William Barclay once said that, “More people have been brought to church by the kindness of real Christian love than by all the theoretical arguments in the world.” Jesus had friendships with his apostles and disciples, but he clearly had good relationships with unbelievers of the time. Such examples are when Jesus embraces the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-39; in Matthew 9:9-10 Jesus went to a tax collectors house to fellowship with him; and Jesus talked with Zacchaeus in Luke 19:5. In all of those relationships, the love of God the Father was the focus. If a person focuses too much on just the relationship with the unbeliever, he or she may become corrupt just as 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns that we cannot be misled: “Bad company corrupts god character” (NIV).

'''Conclusion'''

All of these groups from friendships to monks and churches are formed and work as well as they do because of the priority in the relationships. A person cannot grow and live well by being completely independent. But when God is the first and foremost and relationships with man take the next priority, personal growth is possible. So in conclusion, the most efficient and valuable growth in life comes from a person who balances well between relationships with God and relationships with man.

Question: Do more research into the four models of spiritual growth discussed in How People Grow & give a more detailed explanation & support for each of the models. Then, in light of your research, which model(s) of how people grow would you choose & why? (If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinions.)

Introduction Spiritual growth is an important aspect of every person’s life. According Dr. Henry Cloud’s and Dr. John Townsend’s book How People Grow, four models of spiritual growth: the sin model, the truth model, the experiential model, and the supernatural model. The purpose of this paper is to explore each of these models and to determine the positive and negative aspects of each model.

Introduction

Sometimes people grow in many different ways. People could grow physically and spiritually. Physical growth is about your height and weight. Spiritual growth is about knowing the Lord, doing what He commands and seeking to get closer to Him daily. Spiritual growth is not just about reading the Bible and going to church, it’s about learning more about Christ and living according to His will. In this paper, I'm going to talk about the following things: Paradise Lost, The God of Growth, Finding the Best Climate, and The path of Growth.

Paradise Lost

At times, Christians would seem to be growing very well and then seem to hit a spot where they just stand and don't seem to know where else they should go. They seem to lose the reason to grow and just keep following rules but still can't seem to grow past that point. At that point in life, it seems nothing works the way you want it too. You could follow all the methods but they would not work. It feels like you’ve lost something. That’s when you have to start again. As the book How People Grow says, you need to be born again and again. Growing involves your spiritual life. You have to learn about God and have a relationship with Him. Some people just read their Bible or pray before meals but you have to do much more than that. You have talk to Him, tell Him what’s bothering you, what’s on your mind. Delve into His word and learn more about Him. You also have to grow emotionally. You have to learn how to deal with day to day problems. Everything about growth (spiritual or emotional) is in the Bible. You have to go back to the Bible to figure everything out. Everyone wants to grow in their emotional life and in their relations but they forget one important thing; every growth is linked with spiritual growth. If you can't grow spiritually than you can't grow in any other area of your life. That’s the point where you should go back to your root, or to what you have lost. We should go back and follow the paths of faith and see how they can help us grow.

We should figure out what we have lost. Sometimes we get so busy about other things that we don’t see what God is doing in our own life let alone other people’s life. We don’t even see the little signs around you that shout about God being real. Most of the time, we look at our problems and forget about what God have to do with our problems and how He can be part of getting out of them. We think of our problems like diseases that need to be treated with specific drugs and not as real life issues that only God could treat. We also forget that we have to let ourselves receive His help and that in order to receive His help we have to go back to his teachings. We also have to go back to the life that He wanted us to live with our family and friends and even ourselves. The answer to everything is God. We walked away from God because we have to be in control and that’s when we lost everything. In order to regain everything that we have lost, we have to go back and let Him be in control of everything.

Having a relationship with God is not all; you have to have a relationship with each other. If you can’t have a relationship with each other then you won’t be able to have a relationship with God. For us to be able to live well with everybody, we have to think about God as a source. Remember that God will provide everything we need. We also have to depend on people. God should be in control and we should be following his path and doing what he wants us to do. He should be the one judging us and telling us what we need in our life. The things that I have just mentioned are the things that we have lost and after regaining them, we could move on to next part of our growth process.

The God of Growth

The second part of growth knows that God is always on your side. God is always there for you but you have to seek Him first. We always think of God like superman who would come and rescue us when we are in trouble but we never realize that God is always with us. In order to grow, we have to know that God is always there even when we don’t need help. God shows us His grace by being there. You should also let Him be there. By knowing that God is on our side we will also know that other people are also on our side.

God is there to help us but we have to need his help. We should also think of God as our example to growth. The way Jesus live His life is the only example we need. A part of growth knows that we are the temple of God and that He resides in us. Another way of spiritual growth is reading your Bible to see how Jesus shows us spiritual growth. Another important thing to spiritual growth is understanding suffering. Being able to identify with Jesus also helps us with having authority over the devil and dealing with temptation.

In order to grow, we have to have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is here to begin on growth process. He gave us security and brings us into a relationship with God. The Holy Spirit also gave us advice. As Galatians 5:25 says, “let us keep in step with the spirit” and keeping in step with the Spirit is a sign of growth. Just by having faith is also a sign of growth. We must give the spirit control over us. If we don’t yield to the Spirit and do what He asks us to do then we aren’t growing. We should let the spirit shows us what we need to know. The Spirit is here to lead us into growth and we are supposed to follow. God is a God of growth and He uses different ways to help us grow.

Finding the right climate

Before we find the climate to grow, we should know what God’s first plan was for us, His people. God uses us to help other people in their spiritual growth. Everybody has different gifts, God uses the gifts he gives us to help others to grow. You can’t grow alone, you must have a relationship with God and with others in order to experience spiritual growth. God designed relationships as a part of growth. In the beginning, God created two people instead of one. Connecting with other people helps us to deal with our problems, which in turn helps us to grow. We should also look to other people for help when it comes to disciplining ourselves. Accountability is important and we can only get accountability through other people. We can also receive grace and forgiveness through others. When we experience grace our hearts are connected and we are on a path of growth. Other people could also support and strengthen us through our growth. We need the help and support of others when we are dealing with issues that distract us from spiritual growth. There could be specific people or a person who could guide you through difficult decisions you need to make. When you fall down and are hurt, you’re in pain, you might bleed, eventually a scab will form. Spiritual growth is the same way. You may have been hurt by someone or something, you grieve and then you start to heal. Some people choose to keep “picking their scab” they never completely heal, therefore their spiritual growth is limited. It is in these times you need someone to confront you about what you are doing. We sin, and have to ask God for His forgiveness once again. We need God more than anything or anyone else but we do need people to help us grow.

Sometimes we think we need to work and do busy activities in order to be saved, that is not true. Our spiritual growth can be hindered if we think this way. God already accepts us. We need to accept other people as well. Acceptance is the heart of the growth process and it also helps us not to be under the law of the Old Testament. The only way to trust someone is to get to know them and to build a relationship with them, to do this we must first accept that person. It is much easier to confess to someone we know and trust than to someone we are not familiar with. Sometimes as we grow we do not realize that we need acceptance ourselves. It is God’s job to deal with our needs but we have to know that we need His help. Acceptance is normal. Acceptance is like grace, we can’t earn it we are just given the privilege of receiving it.

We are forgiven by the grace of God and God accepts us. We sometimes have difficult time believing in our heart that we are accepted and forgiven. God sent his only Son to die for each of us, God forgives us for our sins, if we believe in Him we will have eternal life. (John 3:16). We don’t have to be good in order to be forgiven, we only have to believe and confess our sins to God. Sometimes we are like people who are never reassured about the love of God. God loves us and forgives us when we ask, that is all we have to know. Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves. God forgives us when we do not deserve to be forgiven. It was our sins that nailed Jesus to the cross and he forgives us, why then do we find it so hard to forgive ourselves? God forgives the greatest sin any of us could ever commit, all we have to learn to do is to forgive ourselves. When we forgive ourselves, it is then that we experience spiritual growth.

The Path of Growth

The first path to growth is the Bible. It is the only book that will guide you in your path of spiritual growth. The Bible’s teaching has had power over people since it was written, and it still has power over us today. The Bible shows us that God is the source of spiritual growth. Last but not least, the Bible gives us resources for our growth. We could read the Bible over and over and probably learn something new about growth each time. The Bible shows us the way to the one who is the master of all growth. The Bible teaches us all we need to know about growth. Some of us have knowledge about spiritual growth yet do not know much about the Bible or the other way around. Some know much about the Bible but do not experience spiritual growth. This can sometimes be an issue. The Bible is the heart of God, God’s words were given to direct our growth. There are many different ways a person can learn about the Bible, the important thing is to learn it and put what you learn into practice.
Sometimes in order to grow we have to suffer and as soon as we get past our suffering we can grow. We should also let go and let God take over. Trying to be in control isn’t going to help us with our growth. Grief also helps us to grow. After we let go of our pain then our growth can begin.

Some people seek to be good at all times. Being good is not a step to growth, seeking his kingdom is a step to growth (Matt 6:33). Human beings tend to go after worldly ways instead of going after His Kingdom. That’s why reading the Bible is important because we learn how to seek God’s kingdom. Knowing what God want us to do is not enough. We have to understand them and do them. After understanding it then we could discipline ourselves to find the answer we sought.

Discipline is needed for us to grow but we also need to be honest about our need of discipline. God disciplines us when we need it and because of His discipline we become disciplined. We need to be receptive to discipline and discipline needs to come from an outside source. We need to know what we need discipline for and turn to God and our peers for help instead of denying it.

Spiritually, all of us are poor (Matt 5:3). All of us are in need of some sort of spiritual growth. Our weakness and emotional injuries are a part of our spiritual poverty. Spiritual poverty is important in helping us grow when we realize we are in need of the help and get the help that we need. Everyone who became a Christian admits that there was something wrong with their lives before they were Christians. When we found out that we were living in the wrong path, we decide to seek the right path and learn everything we can about the path. We began to hunger and thirst for God. Being poor in spirit helps us to be honest about our lives and to seek for help.

Another path for spiritual growth is obedience. Not obeying God is living aprt from God and if we live apart from God then we can’t grow spiritually. Obedience doesn’t mean that you can’t grow spiritually. Obedience doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun. When we obey God, we get good things in return. The Bible is a source of obedience and by following the Bible, we are actually obeying God’s will.

Everyone sins and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). We don’t have any power over sin, God does. The only way to help with sinning is repentance and asking god for help. We don’t have any excuses for sinning. We sin because we have a sinful nature (Rom 7:5). Blaming others for our sin just keeps this sin going in circles and we never really do away with that sin. Sin is an internal thing and only god could heal the stuff that is inside us. We have to confront our sin then flee from it. Ask God to help you run form your sin (Matt 6:13). Sin is an act of disobedience and if you love God you wouldn’t want to disobey god.

Knowing the truth helps in our growth process. The Bible is the truth and it provides our path to growth. Then if the Bible is the truth, then truth is the path to growth. The truth is God’s plan for us and that truth will help us prosper. We need to love the truth and then we will grow.

Being active in spiritual growth was God’s plan. God can’t work on our life if we can’t work on our own. We have to initiate the work and ask for God’s help. Spiritual growth is the same as physical growth, you can’t just lie in your bed all day and think that you’re going to grow. We have to search for the parts of our lives that need growth and work on it.

The last part of growth is waiting. You can’t just lift weight and expect your muscles to get big by the next morning. You have to keep on lifting and wait for the muscles to grow. Growth is the same. You have to wait. We don’t know how long growth takes but we have to be patient and wait for God’s timing.

I believe…

All the four methods of spiritual growth in Claud and Townsend’s book, How People Grow, are important for our spiritual growth. All the methods that they talked about are in the Bible and if the Bible is the truth then everything He wrote about is truth.

In conclusion, finding what was lost, knowing that god is the God of growth, finding the best place to grow, and the path of growth is essential for spiritual growth.

'''Topic 4: Doctrine of the Trinity—essential or pointless?
Question: Do you think that it is important to believe in the doctrine of the Trinity? Why or why not? (Be sure to do more research into the issue. If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinions.)

'''Introduction'''

Throughout the world, you can find many ideas of what the trinity is and what it does. Some religions do not believe in the trinity, others believe the Trinity consists entirely of Christ taking three forms, and still others believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in three separate bodies and yet existing as one whole entity. But still, what is the trinity’s purpose? Is it essential to our Christian walk? What does the Bible say on it? And last but not least where did the trinity idea come from? These questions on the trinity will be answered in this paper.

'''What is the Holy Trinity?'''

The word "Trinity" is not found in the New Testament, nor is the doctrine explicitly taught there. However, foundations of the concept of the Trinity can be seen in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John, one of the latest and most theologically developed of the New Testament books (Religion facts).

The Holy Trinity is defined differently by different religions. “Christians are not polytheists (we don’t believe in many Gods), nor are we strictly speaking monotheists (believing in one God).Instead Christians are Trinitarians” (Everystudent). “The Holy Trinity is part of many sects of Christian doctrine. The belief is that God is of three parts: God the Father, God the Son, as represented by Christ, and God the Holy Spirit. The key element of this belief is that God is at once a single God, but also that each aspect of God is individual” (Christensen). The word trinity comes from Tri meaning three and unity meaning one. (Religion facts) “The bible clearly speaks of God the father, God the son, and God the holy spirit… and also clearly present that there is only one God” (Religion facts). The holy trinity is also known in a limited way as Creator, Redeemer and Counselor (Berwick). Some have also tried to give scientific illustrations for the Trinity, such as H2O being water, ice and steam. They are all different forms, but all are H2O ( Religion facts). This is an attempt by people to understand a very complex issue. Others think of it a part of the mystery of God (Christensen).

This is where the debate into the Holy Trinity originates. How can there be three complete individuals but yet still be one full and complete God. It is not the deity of the God that has been disputed, but the deity of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Each is proven to have the same deity as God in the bible. Jesus is addressed as God, Lord, and Savior. These area all names that are given to God. Scripture acknowledges the Son as having attributes that belong exclusively to God. Third, Jesus does the same work that is known of God; like the forgiveness of sins (Highfield 17). Just like Jesus the deity of the Holy Spirit can be proven in the bible. The Holy Spirit is called by divine names, acknowledged as having divine attributes and also does divine work in us (Highfield 19). However recognizing the definite distinction between The Father,The Son, and The Holy Spirit is as important as recognizing their unity (Highfield 20).

'''The purpose of the Holy Spirit'''

Belief in the Trinity tells us to invest in relationships. If there is no Trinity, then before the world there were no relationships. With no relationships there is no love, because you can only have love where there is relationships. However we know that there was and is perfect love between The Father,The Son, and The Holy Spirit (St Pauls theological center).

“Belief in the trinity teaches us to get involved in building community. The word community is about common life, which is held together in unity. Common life that’s held together even though there is difference within it” (St Pauls theological center).

In this world we are taught to be the same. We are made to mold ourselves to fit into a community. We believe that if you are not the same then you do not fit in. The trinity teachers us diversity in unity. There are three persons in one. They are different from each other, but the same in unity. We do not have to make everyone the same, because God made everyone different (St Pauls theological center).

Last and most importantly we cannot love God with all our hearts if we do not know him. The only way for us to know him is through Jesus Christ his son, and The Holy Spirit that is inside of us. If Jesus and The Holy Trinity are not fully God then how can we fully know him? (Everystudent).

'''Why is the Doctrine of the Trinity Essential?'''

Recognizing the scriptural distinctions among the Father, Son, and Spirit is as important in assessing the doctrine of the Trinity as recognizing their unity in the divine nature. (Holloway, Harris, and Black). For any student of the Bible it is essential to have a working understanding of the Doctrine of the Trinity. To be able to define our own faith we must have a concept of the Trinity and what it means to us.

Basically, it is essential to have a working theory of the Trinity to ensure what you don’t believe. There have been various movements that supported either one side or the other of the Trinity. Subordinationists argue for the inferior status of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Modalism attempts to preserve the unity of God by arguing for the full deity of the Son and the Spirit at the expense of the distinctions among the Father, Son, and Spirit. (Holloway, Harris, and Black).

An understanding of the Trinity and the history of the Doctrine of the Trinity is useful for all Christians. It strengthens their belief system and brings them closer God. It is essential to grasping what the scripture says.
Must you believe in the Trinity to be Saved?

Christ says “All who believe in me shall not perish but have everlasting life”. To be saved, it is not necessary to believe in the Doctrine of the Trinity. One must believe that Jesus is the son of God, that he died for our sins, and will come back. A belief in Christ is necessary for salvation. However a full understanding of how Jesus fits into the Doctrine of the Trinity is not.

'''Scripture'''

So we have talked about what The Trinity is and why it is essential, but what does the Bible have to say about it? Well let us start back at the very beginning, back to Genesis when the first evidences of The Trinity are seen. In Genesis 1:26 the Bible says “And God said, let us make man in our own image after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every thing that creepeth upon the earth.” Who is God talking to when He says “let US make man in OUR own image after OUR likeness…?” At that time there was no other person or being around, unless he was talking to the Angels. He wanted to make man in their own image, and it does not say anywhere in the Bible that Angels assisted in the making of man.

The only other sensible option in the depiction of this verse would be God the Father was talking to Christ and/or the Holy Ghost. He follows up in another verse after Adam and Eve sinned saying, “And the Lord God said, behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: (Genesis 3:22).” When the snake was tempting Eve in the garden, did he not say she would be as a god if she ate of the fruit? Now that they ate, we see God talking to Christ and/or the Holy Spirit telling them that man has become like them.

We see this interaction again, in the Garden of Gethsemane, the night Jesus was to be betrayed by Judas. Jesus prayed to the Father for strength and that the Father’s will might be done (Luke 22:42). Later on, while hanging on the cross, Jesus cried, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do,” and later said, “Father into thy hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:34 and Luke 23:46). These are just some of the references for both the Father and the Son to exist as two separate beings.
The next big evidence of The Trinity is at Jesus’ baptism found in both Matthew 3:13-17 and Luke 3:21-22. Matthew 3:16-17 says, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Here in the scripture we see a distinctive separation between The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. The Son is now being baptized into the ministry. The Spirit is descending on him like a dove and the Father’s voice echoes from heaven “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” If the trinity did not exist, then whose voice was heard? Christ did not act as a ventriloquist. If he, Jesus, was the only being and there was no trinity, then he would have proclaimed his ministry himself, instead of a voice coming from heaven.

Finally, this brings us to Old Testament scripture and proof of the Trinity. Starting in the leadership of Moses, God had his people build the Ark of the Covenant. This ark was very sacred. You could not touch it or open it or you would be punished with death, this was proven several times. An example of this is when the Philistines were returning the Ark, and it went to the Beth-shemite camp. When the people took off the cover, they also removed the mercy seat with it. The mercy seat was placed on top of the ark and the priests were to pour the blood of the sacrifice over it. By doing this, the sins of the people were shielded from God’s judgment because when God sees sin he must judge. When the mercy seat was removed, God saw sin and 50, 040 people died that day.

Now go to when Jesus was on earth. According to other beliefs, Jesus is the only God, and the God-head does not exist. If this is true, Jesus would have been face to face with the sins of the people with no mercy seat and blood to cover it. Jesus was the blood to save us so he would have to judge sin and judge the people that moment. Therefore there must be a difference between God the Father and God the Son.

All throughout time people have had different opinions about The Trinity and if it is true or not. They can look at a verse and take it out of context to match their own beliefs. These next few paragraphs will show you both arguments. The biggest controversy starts with the Baptism. In Matthew 28:19 we see the commandment, given by Christ himself, to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” However, you look at Acts 2:38 and it says “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” We see in Matthew that there is a clear distinction between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Why would Christ talk about all three if they were in fact only one person/being? According to other people who do not believe in the trinity, Christ is the only being and that when he came to this earth he put himself into a fleshly body and became the Son also. So when people look at the verse in Acts they say it is proof that you are only praying to Jesus Christ, not the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

'''The Holy Trinity and Ministry'''

The Doctrine of the Holy Trinity is essential to the vocation of Ministry. The Trinity provides a foundation and framework for the vocation of ministry. No doctrine is more relevant to the identity and calling of ministers than the Trinity. "Many view the Trinity as a problem, difficult to understand and explain. At first glance it may appear that way, but as we ponder it, we find the oposite is true. The Trinity is a solution that makes so many perplexing issues intelligible" (Seamands). The Doctrine of the Trinity can be described as the grammar of the Christian faith. A grammar is a set of rules governing a particular language. It tells us how to speak the language correctly and to properly convey our meaning. As the Christian grammar, trinitarian doctrine enables us to speak rightly about the God who is revealed in Scripture as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "It is this doctrine that makes the Christian understanding of God distinctly Christian and not merely thesitic" (Seamands).

One may understand and speak a language without knowing its grammar. Grammar itself does not convey meaning and content, except about the language itself. Often commited Christians can not articulate an understanding of the Trinity, yet they grasp it intuitively. Nevertheless, as is the case with any language, knowledge of trinitarian grammar is important. Without it we can not fathom the richness or depth of the Christian understanding of God, nor can we communicate it effectly to others. It's crucial for Christian leaders to know the rules of trinitarian grammar.

In Seamand's book, "Ministry in the Image of God", the characteristics of the Trinity is broken down into several ideas that suggest their relations to an understanding of ministry shaped by the Trinity. The first characteristic is Relational Personhood: The nature of Trinitarian ministry. Human beings, created in the image of the triune God, are constituted for relationship. "The relational personhood, which characterizes the inner life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is fundamental to human personhood as well" (Seamand).

The second characteristic is Joyful Intimacy: The foundation of Trinitarian ministry. Jesus prayed "that the love with which you {The Father} have loved me {The Son} may be in them, and I in them" (John 17:26). This discusses love's self-sacrificing nature. The focus is on the joyful intimacy of this trinitarian love and its implications for minsitry. Jesus said that The Father's love for him (The Son) existed "before the foundation of the world" (John 17:24). The trinitarian persons have always had intimate communion and delightful fellowship with one another.

The third characteristic is Glad Surrender: The heart of Trinitarian ministry. To demonstrate the depth of God's sacrificial self-giving love for humanity, the New Testament writers always point to a concrete, historical event: Christ's death on the cross. "God proves his love for us," (Romans 5:8). Similarly John writes, "In this love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:10). But Christ's death not only supremely reveals the nature of divine love, it also discloses what is eternally etched in the heart of the triune God. Before creation, before the existence of a world in need of redemption, self-giving, self-sacrificing love marked the fellowship of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Lamb of God who died on Clavary to take away sins, is the Lamb slain for the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).

'''History of the Holy Trinity'''

Although the doctrine of The Holy Trinity is a new development, the roots of the doctrine can be seen from the first century (Religionfacts). “The word "Trinity" is not found in the New Testament, nor is the doctrine explicitly taught there. However, foundations of the concept of The Trinity can be seen in the New Testament, especially in the Gospel of John” (Religionfacts). The New Testament and the Nicene Creed are deeply entangled with each other. The Nicene Creed is the document created by the Council of Nicea explaning the Holy Trinity. The wording and the concepts in the Nicene Creed come from the New Testament. In fact, one of the most important debates at the Council of Nicea concerned whether it is proper to include a word in the Nicene Creed that does not occur in the New Testament (Collins). This controversy is decribed in futher detail below. Many believe that the beginning of the Christian era saw the beginning of the Doctrine of The Holy Trinity. However, numerous variations of the Trinity existed long before the Christian era (Pack). Some of the first forms of the Holy Trinity come from ancient Egypt about three centuries after the great flood. These Egyptions worshiped three seperate gods. These Egyptian deities were known as Osiris, Iris, and Horus. (Pack). Another example would be in ancient Rome, a triad of deities was worshipped—Jupiter, Fortuna and Mercury. These deities had similarities with the above mentioned triads (Pack). "The Nicene Council did not invent the Trinity in the early fourth century, as some people imagine. A full century before the Nicene Council, Tertullian wrote a voluminous explanation and defense of the Trinity ... A couple of decades before Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria and Irenaeus, bishops at opposite ends of the Mediterranean basin, both taught the Trinity. A half century or more before Irenaeus and Clement, we find Trinitarian teachings in the authentic works of Justin Martyr, who died in 157 (Collins)."

We see many changes in not only the beliefs, but the actions of the church through the centuries. We do not know much about the history of the church, but we do know that there is a change from the first century to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries (Christensen). Churches began to change thier beliefs and the way they worshiped. “Rather than treating God’s word as direct instruction from the almighty, the orthodox Christian movement came to use the bible to allegorically explain pre-conceived philosophies” (Pack). It is because of this, true Christians were forced underground where they could practice thier own beliefs. Thus causing the difference between the beliefs of the first Century Christians to the 5th century (Pact). There were several different controversies between the new and upcoming religions. “The Christian movement hailed the trinity as a solution to the various contradictions in their understanding. It seamed to satisfy the requirements of monotheisms while acknowledging that Christ was God in the flesh” (Pack).

There were many different men who had their own unique theory on The Trinity. One of these was Plato. Plato was deeply ingrained with Trinitarian thought. He sought to better define the Creator by elevating this Being above the host of other deities in Greek mythology. His definition consisted of: (1) The “first God,” who was the Supreme Being in the universe; (2) the “second God,” whom Plato described as the “soul of the universe”; and (3) the “third God,” defined as the “spirit”. (Pack)

Another is Lucian, Lucian strongly taught Christ’s divinity prior to his appearing in the flesh—without the philosophical trappings of the Trinity (Pack).

Arius, who studied under Lucian, compromised. He leaned toward the teachings of Paul of Samosata, who maintained that Christ had to be a created being and had not been God prior to becoming flesh… Defining Christ as a created Being, Arius deduced that a member of the true Godhead could never dwell among sinful mankind. This became the greatest weakness in his thinking and became the basis for the rejection of his views at Nicaea. (Pack) However, we see from the scriptures that Christ humbled himself to become a man, therefore he was able to dwell among us. Athanasius followed the philosophy of Origen. Origan weighed as a Platonist and Stonic. Origan was the antihesis of Lucian. “Origan has been described as the most distinguished and most influential of all the theologians of the ancient church” (Pack) Lucian however, was considered a Judaizer much in tradition of the original apostles (Pack). Ignoring the bible men came to regard Plato’s theory as the best attempt to explain God and his relationship to the Holy Trinity (Christension).

Gnosticism was the new religion trying to explain the Trinity. Gnosticism was developed from the theroies of Plato. However Gnosticism is considered by some to be from Plato’s more stable positions. “Note that Gnosticism was acknowledged to be distinct from true Christianity" (Pack). Due to the many changes in the churches thier were many new branches of religons being developed. Gnosticism was soon left behind, as others before it, for its unusual beliefs (Religionfacts).

“Plato’s influence in almost every aspect of the movement that replaced first-century Christianity was profound—including mystery religions, the “soul,” and the Trinity.Gnosticism’s influence in the established Christian movement, especially in the second and third centuries, should never be understated” (Pack).

During this time the Trinity became the focus of many of the local religion groups. For example, Justin Martyr, known for his anti-Semitism and opposition to all things Hebrew, defined the trinity as “the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit… Irenaeus defined the Godhead as consisting of “the Father, the Word and the Wisdom.” Eventually, the trinity concept became the focus of theologians and philosophers such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen. (Pack)

It was because of the interest shown by many philosophers, and the controversies between them, that there was a need for the Council of Nicaea. There were two main opposing sides to the controversy at Nicaea (Christension). One of these sides was represented by Arius, and the other by Athanasius. Both men were influenced by the same speculated mindset of Greek philosophy (Pack). Constantine who was Roman Caesar called for the Council of Nicaea (the first ecumenical council of the Catholic church) to meet. He did this to try to put and end to the controversy and finally decide on the true meaning of The Holy Trinity (Pack). “In 325, the Council of Nicaea set out to officially define the relationship of the Son to the Father, in response to the controversial teachings of Arius. Led by bishop Athanasius, the council established the doctrine of the Trinity as orthodoxy and condemned Arius' teaching that Christ was the first creation of God” (Riligionfacts). Although the council was required to choose a side. Both sides of the argument were frowned upon by the Council for their lack of biblical teaching. Also both sides departed from the bible and gave their own opinions (Pack).

After the opposing views at Nicaea had been presented, both sides continued to lobby and position behind the scenes for a number of weeks. Most of the delegates were not impressed with either argument, both of which were considered somewhat extreme. Finally, as the Nicaean Council came to an end, most of the delegates voted in favor of Athanasius. This was not so much a mandate for his beliefs, but rather the lesser of two evils (Pack). The Nicaen creed is the only creed that was promulgated by any of the seven ecumenical councils and thus it is the only creed that is truly ecumenical and universal (Collins).

The Nicene Creed reads:
I. We believe in one God the Father Almighty, the maker of all things visible and invisible.
II. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father, only begotten, that is of the substance of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made, both those in heaven and those on earth. Who for us men and for our salvation came down and was incarnate, and was made man, And suffered, And rose the third day, Ascended into heaven, Is coming to judge quick and dead (Pack). Nicaea did not end the controversy, however. Debate over how the creed (especially the phrase "one substance") ought to be interpreted continued to rage for decades… But for the most part, the issue of the Trinity was settled at Nicaea and, by the fifth century, never again became a focus of serious controversy (Religionfacts).

'''Church Fathers'''
Augustine has been called the “the greatest doctor of the Church, the greatest philosopher of the patristic age and probably the most important and influential theologian of the Church.” (Fortman). Augustine’s theory starts with the unity of nature and moves to the trinity of Persons. The unity is the most important part, and the trinity of persons is in the background. Augustine focuses on one divine nature subsisting in three Persons. The divine unity had never been in the forefront in its relation to the three divine Persons. Augustine stresses oneness rather than threeness and starts from the one divine essence rather than from the saving deed of God in Christ, which he assumes to be known. This new starting point will be very influential in all subsequent Western Trinitarian teaching, and will lead to a distinction on how the Western world views the Trinity and God.

Gregory of Nyssa wrote several Trinitarian works, "That There Are not Three Gods", "To the Greeks", "Concerning the Deity of the Son and Holy Spirit", and an important treatise "Against Eunomius." Gregory of Nyssa writes that the Holy Spirit is out of God and is of Christ and he compares The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit to three torches, the first of which imparts its light to the second and through the second to the third. In another passage he seems to speak of the Holy Spirit as caused by the Son: “the Holy Spirit is in touch with the Only-begotten, who is conceived of as before the Spirit’s subsistence only in the theoretical light of a cause” (Fortman). Gregory clearly insists mainly on the Father’s causal role in the production of the Holy Spirit, yet he seems to insinuate that the Son too has a functional or causal role in this production, and this without detriment to the Father’s primordial role.

'''Personal Beliefs'''
Our personal beliefs are as follows: we believe the Doctrine of the Trinity is a very important aspect of Theology and in ministry. We do not believe that it is necessary to salvation because the only belief necessary for salvation is a belief in Christ as the Son of God, and that He died on the cross for our sins and was raised three days later. The belief of the Trinity is necessary for any person studying the Bible seriously. It is imperative to believe that The Father,The Son, and The Holy Spirit are all three aspects of the same God and yet three different beings as shown in the content of this paper.

Topic 2: How do people grow?
Question: Do more research into the four models of spiritual growth discussed in How People Grow & give a more detailed explanation & support for each of the models. Then, in light of your research, which model(s) of how people grow would you choose & why? (If the group cannot come to a consensus, feel free to have different group members each express their own opinion)

Spiritual maturity is learning how to walk in obedience to God. It is making the choice to live by God's viewpoint rather than your human viewpoint. Galatians 5:16 and 25 give the key, "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature... Since we live by the Spirit let us keep in step with the Spirit."

Learn to walk in the Holy Spirit's control by studing God's word. 2 Timothy 2:15;3:16-17 instruct us, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth... All scripture os God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebriking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." By choosing to apply God's word in everyday circumstances, as you walk step-by-step, applying God's word to your life, you will grow spiritually.

The process of growth involves being taught and even corrected by God as we read His word (Hebrew 12:4-13). Many people continue to grow by learning and being mentored by others who are well instructed in God's word.

Confidence is another evidence of Christian growth. Confidence is knowing who God is, and desiring His will and plan for our lives. Confidence is understanding that God will be with us- He will never leave us or forsake us. He is there to help us (Hebrews 13:5-6). Confidence is knowing that God will fulfill His promises of giving believers eternal life (2 Peter 3:9). Our hope lies in what Christ has done, and not is our own works (Ephesians 2:8-10).

Confidence also involves knowledge about God and His powerful ways of working in us. We know that when we blow it, we have a mediator and when we confess our wrongs we will be forgiven (Hebrew 4:4-16; 1 John 1:8-10). God gives us confidence to trust him to get us through the circumstances and challenges of life.

Many of us have trouble with the concept of sin. It is difficult to accept that even when we are trying to be good, there are areas of our life that remain sinful. We may still harbor lusts, or tell lies, or make hurtful comments to others.

Hard as it is to accept our failures, it may be even harder to confess them- even privately in prayer to God. Clearly, however, that is what God requires. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Confession of sin alone is not all God requires. He asks that we repent, that we turn away from our sinful activities, and turn instead to follow him.

Repentance doesn't mean we become perfect. God understands that even at our best, we may backslide at times. However, every time we seek His forgiveness, we will receive it.

There is even better news for those who have learned to confess their sins, to repent and to turn to God. The Bible says Jesus Himself will come to our aid. "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense- Jesus Christ, the Righteous one. He is the atoning sacrifice for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world" (1 John 2:1).

When sins are forgiven by God, the Bible says that God does not hold those sins against us. Psalm 103:11-12 says, "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us".

Sanctification is an inward spiritual process whereby God brings about holiness and change in the life of a Christian by means of the Holy Spirit. The effects of living in a fallen world have harmed everybody differently. We all face different issues, struggle with sins, and past hurts of varying degrees, hindering our ability to live the life God desires for us. Once we accept Jesus Christ into our lives, the Holy Spirit enters our life to start a transformation process. He convicts us on areas that need to be changed, helping us to grow in holiness. We begin to view the world, people, and personal difficulties from a more biblical perspective. Our choices begin to be motivated by love and truth and not selfishness. The transformation process may be painful, but it is always motivated by God's love for us. God promises in His word to not give us more than we are able to handle (Corinthians 10;13). This is the working process of sanctification in the life of every believer. Though the process is personal for each individual, the end goal is to prevent sin and produce spiritual growth. We will never be sinless in this life. In fact, the Bible warns against such false teachings in 1 John 1:8 "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us".

How to be saved

“Salvation is by God’s grace, not by an individual’s good works. Salvation must be received by faith. People must believe in their heart that Jesus died for their sins and physically rose again, which is the assurance of forgiveness and resurrection of the body. This is God’s loving plan to forgive sinful people.

== Second Draft Stuff ==
It has always been said that there is only one truly important goal
in all of life, but what is it? One way to get a great variety of people's
goals would be to travel to New York City. Within this incredibly busy metropolis
one can see an unlimited supply of goals that each person has. In the hustle and
bustle of the market in Union Square, a goal of buying and selling good, clean
food is seen. Isn't there a goal of making some money on the side as well? Of
course there is. But what about the business men and women that work on Wall Street?
They're there for making money too aren't they? Yes, they obviously are, but this is
their only goal. The vendors in Union Square, yes, are trying to make money, but they
are also providing a service for the people of the city. They are doing more than
making money, they are helping the city and the people within it get healthy food.
The goal of trying to make money is not bad in and of itself, but, when it is the
only goal in a person's thoughts, it will become an obsession. Many people within
these great United States would say that this is a good goal to have, but this is not
true. Money will only last so long before its no longer of any use to you. This inevitable
stage of life is called death. This brings up another question; what happens at death?
Well money, possessions, friends, or even your family can't be taken along, so what happens?
Do the body and soul go somewhere else? And if they do, then how do we know we're saved?
This is a very important question that each person in the world must answer for him or herself.
This is the most important goal in life, not the search for money and possessions.

To fully understand how we are saved we must look at first how we become saved. There are many beliefs in how we are saved but the way we believe is more commonly known as the conservative christian belief. The reason we believe this method is the right way is straight from spiritual doctrine, not how men say but how the Bible says to be saved. The Bible clearly says baptism by emersion(Matthew 3:13). That also before we are baptized we must repent, I repeat we must repent. Peter tells his listeners "Repent and be baptized"(Acts 2:38). God knows your heart and to say He doesn't is to question Him. Now just what do we have to believe in to be saved, nothing more than that Jesus is the Christ, which means that He died on that cross and three days later rose from the dead(John 3:36). Belief in Jesus is the first part of being saved. After you believe in Jesus Christ you must and yet again I repeat must be baptized into Christ(Colossians 2:12).

Realizing what you need to be saved is the first step on the stairway to heaven. The next step is truely believing what you are saying. You can say you believe and that you want to be sved but in truth you may just be doing what you feel other people want you to do or what your parents want you to do. Baptism is a holy ritual between man and God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. God wants you to want to be saved. He does not want you to just get baptized to say your saved he wants you to want to be saved. Being baptized in Christ is how we saved, to repeat, being baptized trough Jesus is how we are saved. God sent John the Baptist to show the way for people to be ready for Jesus. God knew what was going to happen, that is why he got the people of the Bible ready for Jesus arrival. Then as Jesus came he did many miracles and gathered many followers, but the most important thingh did was die. Jesus commited no sin and therefore was the perfect sacrifice for which we are saved. In the old testiment God had the Hebrews give a sacrifice of lambs and rams to Him to forgive their sins. When Jesus came to Earth he became the perfect sacrifice. So if we blieve and are baptized we will be saved but only if we believe.

The next step on the stairway to heaven is the exceptance of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus made his ascended into heaven he left the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that the Spirit will not leave us as he did. The Spirit will live in us and as long as we keep true to the Spirit and the will of God we will be saved. Now if we should fall short because we are human and we all will we have the chance to be forgiven. If we ask God to forgive our sins he will, but only if it is done with a pure heart. Selfishness and hypocrisy is a sin, and if you ask God through the Spirit to forgive your sins and you are not sincere God will not forgive you. God told us to ask without a doubt in our hearts and nothing the we ask will be refused. God said if we ask He would move mountains.

Many people then raise the question of children being saved. In the Bible I have yet to find a single verse of the sins of children or when children start to sin. Also that if a young child dies where does that child go, to heaven or hell? For this question the Catholics believe you can pray that child into heaven, onve again the Catholics have no basis on scripture for this belief. I sat down this weekend with my minister from my home church and asked him this question. He told me his personal beliefs and also gave me a few book titlse on this subject. What he said makes sense to me but it might not to other people, he told me to look at his grandaughter and ask me if I truely thought that if she died our merciful God who sent his own son to die(John 3:16) would send her to hell. I can't say that God would do that, But then when does a child become old enough, he simply told me that when man had sinned he realized he was naked, that little girl was running around in her diaper without shame. So that is my belief and I will defend that belief. Now you take a slightly older child and you will find that they are embarressed of their nakedness, just as Adam and Eve were, and a child when naked will hide from people, just as Adam and Eve hid from God in the garden.

People of different faiths will tell you different things on how to be saved, but there is one and only one way(Acts 4:12). Jesus has also said this himself that there is one and only one way(John 3:5), meaning that if you believe in Jesus and in what he teaches there is only one way to be saved and that is through Jesus himself. In the Greek translation of the Bible the word used for baptism also means emersion, makes me wonder where the Catholics got the sprinkling of children. If you actually read the Bible child Baptism makes absolutely no sense at all and the fact that many people practice not only sprinkling but also the baptism of babies is a very scary thought to me. Children can not repent, and if they did repent what sins did an infant commit. Now I do have a Catholic friend named Zac Zabitski,I called him he said I could use his name, and we have many debates on doctrine of scripture and doctrine of Catholics. Due to a belief that all chrildren is born with the sin of their parents is why child baptism preformed. Now when asked to pull that up in scripture he took me to the story of the blind man from John 9, If you don't know this story a man who was born blind was given his sight by Jesus, the phariseeses and teachers had told this man that he must have been born blind due to the sins of his parents, where as Jesus said it was not because of his parents sins but so that the Lord may show his power through the healing of this man, now that was the only scripture he could show me and it really didn't help his case at all it actually proved mine more than his. So as for child baptism is clearly not Bible doctorine. Sprinkling isnot Bible doctorine, it is not even mentioned in the Bible. So really the only true baptism is through emersion becuse it is the only one suported by Bible scripture.

When looking at different religious beliefs it can be rather odd what you will find out. For instance, the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that you are to be baptized as Jehovah’s Witness, which is contrary to the bible in that we are to be baptized into Christ as a Christian only. Then as a Jehovah’s Witness you must earn your everlasting life on earth: mostly through door-to-door work. Salvation in heaven is limited to 144,000 “anointed ones”. Sad for us but this number has already been reached. But there is still hope for those of us who have not been “anointed”; the rest of us righteous ones (also known as the Great Crowd) get to live on earth for 1,000 years, and we must obey god perfectly or else we will be annihilated. Not one time is there mentioned in the bible that there will be any tribulation period of a thousand years. That is nothing more than a man made belief. The bible never mentions that there will be an anointed 144 thousand that will go to heaven and leave the rest of us here. Jesus spoke in John 14:1-4 these words, “ Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in god, trust also in me. In my father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Notice there he said ‘in my father’s house are many rooms’. He did not say that there were only 144 thousand rooms, but that there were many. This plan cannot be correct.
Judaism is a religion with a rather different plan of salvation than what the bible has made clear in its’ New Testament pages. As you may already know, in the Old Testament the Jews were the chosen people of God. It was not until after the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ that the bible plan of salvation was opened to anyone beside the Jews. The Jews of today do not recognize Jesus as the Son of God; nor do they believe him to be the king as spoken about to them throughout the Old Testament prophecies. Today’s Jews are still looking for a king to come and reign over them and the rest of this earth. Some Jews believe that through prayer, repentance, and the obeying of the Law you may receive your salvation. Others believe that salvation in a sense is nothing more than the improvement of society. According to Judaism once you die there will be a physical resurrection. The obedient will live forever with God, here on earth; while the unrighteous will suffer. What the Jews do not understand is that Jesus came from heaven to earth to pay the ultimate sacrifice for our sins so that we may live with him eternally in heaven. Jesus is the king that came to earth some 2,000 years ago but they chose to ignore him and what he did for us here on earth. This plan cannot be correct. (notes from Mike) You might want to include some Old Testiment scriptures showing how Jesus fulfuilled the prophicies.
Something you must watch for as well is the usage of the name Christian. Just because something says Christian on it, does not mean that it holds to Christian theology. Christian Science is definitely one good example of a religion with Christ in their name without Christ in their belief. Christian Science states that God is the impersonal Principal of life, truth, love, intelligence, and spirit; God is all that truly exists, all other matter is nothing more than an illusion. Jesus was not the Christ, but he was a man the displayed the “Christ” idea. Christ defined is perfection, it is not any particular person. Jesus could have never of been God, and God could have never become flesh. Jesus did not (nor could he) suffer for sins. And he was not physically resurrected. And Jesus will not be coming back. Christian Science says that humanity is already eternally saved. Sin, evil, sickness, and death are not real. And because death is not real, Heaven and Hell are no more than states of the mind. Heaven can only be reached by attaining harmony (oneness with God). Does anything really need to be said about what is wrong with this bull crap of an idea about salvation? There is one major thing that this religion (if that is what you want to call this) is seriously missing: the Bible. There really is nothing to be said as to what is wrong with this except to say that all of it is wrong, no truth here at all. This plan (obviously) cannot be correct

Christians live upon their belief. All Christians should obey the bible. A lot of Christians live up a word called rejoice, which means true happiness. Some of them follow "Jesus Christ" and refer to themselves as living in faithfulness. All Some who don't usually repent on what they did long. Some so called "Christians" will do things wrong and then repent on all then knowing that god will keep forgiving them, those are not real Christians. Christians know and believe in god. Christians know all of god’s commandments as the world to come. Christians should not worship idols. Christians do NOT lie. They should love one another and not hate anyone. Every morning and through out the day Christians should praise god and all the things that god had done for them. They should share what they got with people that need. God will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. When there is a person in poverty or need among them and they do not have the resources at hand to help, they will fast for two or three days in order to provide the food needed. Christians do not try to impress other people. His basic ideals concerning god, man, sin, salvation, and related theological concepts, along with his ideas concerning right and wrong, will be determining factors in his daily decisions. As living as a Christian you should always be taught and learn that you should always forgive somebody no matter what they do. Forgiveness is a big factor in Christian living.
(notes by Mike Erwin) Include more on your personal life and struggles that people face. Also what people can do to overcome temptation and continue to live the life. Maybe, just a little, more on why we should live the same life as christ.

So how can we be sure we're saved? Different religious groups, between Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses and Jews, each have their very own belief. But what about us as Christians? As a Christian we believe that the Bible is the Living Word of God and every single word within its bindings is 100% factual. From this belief of the factuality of the Bible, we should look towards the Bible for knowing what being saved is and how to get it. In Acts chapter 16 verse 30 and 31, a jailer holding Paul and Silas asks them, "what must I do to be saved?" Their response is very straight forward: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." Then in verse 33 it shows his response, that "immediately he and all his family were baptized." From this we can learn that to truly be saved we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as God's Son and be baptized to receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Without these vital parts one cannot be saved. Therefore, if one believes in Jesus Christ and is baptized in his name, you shall be saved.
